KARE supports families of people who use the service to have short breaks in a number of different ways including:
The person with an intellectual disability stays overnight in one of our Short break houses.
The person with an intellectual disability goes on a regular break to a host family. Now accepting applications from host families. Click here for more information. Have you some time to spare? KARE are currently seeking Home share hosts to provide an alternative respite break to people with intellectual disabilities. No qualifications required, we welcome people from all walks of life. In certain circumstances where a family go away for a break, support can be provided in a way that enables the person to stay in their own home. This support may be provided by paid support and/or family / friend / volunteer support.
The person goes on a break away to a Bed and Breakfast/Guesthouse/Hotel/Rented accommodation thus giving the family a break. This support may be provided by paid support and/or family / friend / volunteer support.
The person is supported to attend social / leisure activities of their choosing in their local community thus giving the family a break. This may be ongoing e.g. weekly or once off to meet a particular need and the support may be provided by paid support and/or family / friend / volunteer support.

These are in place for children who are currently planned in for short breaks in KARE. The children are part of a club/camp and attend social/leisure activities of their choosing thus giving the family a break. This may be ongoing e.g monthly or once off to meet a particular need and the support may be provided by paid support and/or family / friend / volunteer support.
