Last night we celebrated the achievements of our latest Gaisce Award recipients at a ceremony in Sarsfields GAA Clubhouse. The prizes were awarded by Ger Brady, Development Officer at Gaisce.
Gaisce – The President's Award is self-development programme for young people aged 14–25 who participate in several activities or challenges over a specific time period.
There are three categories of Gaisce awards: bronze, silver and gold. For each award level, participants must undertake Challenge Area activities that fulfil Personal Skill, Community Involvement, Physical Recreation and Adventure Journey requirements.
We were proud to have several awardees in both the Bronze and Silver categories last night.
The Bronze Medal recipients were Sean Hanlon, Orla Daffy, Alex Murnane, Kerrianne McCormack, James Harrison-Doyle and Aodhán McFadden.
The Bronze challenge consists of 13 weeks each across three challenges in the areas of Community Volunteering, Physical Challenge and a Personal Skill, with an additional 13 weeks in one of those areas. Activities included recycling, swimming, shopping, tidy towns, and volunteering for Newbridge United FC. The group also had to complete a 25km adventure journey, which took place in Wicklow, including part of the Wicklow Way.
Silver medals were presented to Conor Lacey, Aaron Gorry, Nadia O'Hanlon, Amanda Muldowney, Roisin McGrath, TJ Tierney, Chloe Carroll, Ryan Knott and Chloe Flynn.
The Silver Group took on challenges in the areas of volunteering in a charity shop, creating their own wax melts, learning to bake, travel training and social farming. This group had to do 26 weeks in each of the challenge areas and cover a 50km distance, which they did on the Waterford Greenway over three days and two nights.
