Voice for Kare Attends President’s Garden Party

Members of Kare’s service user advocacy group, Voice for Kare, were recently invited to a garden party at Áras an Uachtaráin.

The special event, hosted by President Michael D Higgins and Sabina Higgins, was to welcome and celebrate ‘Communities in all their diversities’.

Voice for Kare had first contacted the President in 2023, which led to an invitation to meet in person at the annual garden party.

As places were limited, names were drawn to decide who would represent the group, with David Leigh, Voice for Kare Chairperson, being chosen to attend along with Margaret McGarvey, Padraig Reilly and Seamus Doyle from the Voice for Kare Committee. They were accompanied by Kare staff members Lynn Sweeney and George Long.

The day began with a musical performance on the lawn in the iconic Phoenix Park residence to welcome all attendees and make the most of the fine weather. The group explored the back garden, where they meet Sabrina Higgins as well as seeing the Peace Bell and Presidential Rolls Royce.

This was followed by a reception and entertainment in the marquee, with the highlight being an address by President Higgins, during which he acknowledged members of communities, community groups and activists who are building inclusive communities across Ireland.

David and Margaret took the opportunity to present Michael Higgins with a Voice for Kare information booklet, showcasing the work the group does, as well as a personal gift of a tea cosy.

The visit was a memorable experience for everyone involved, underscoring the significance and value of inclusivity in Ireland.
